Marianne Jenni | “The Swiss Abroad are important for Switzerland’s image”

At the end of 2024, there were 826,700 Swiss citizens living abroad, 11% of the total population holding Swiss nationality. Three quarters of them hold more than one nationality, a proportion that rises to 85% for those aged under 18. These statistics on the Swiss Abroad were released by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
As at 31 December 2024, 826,700 Swiss citizens were registered with a competent Swiss representation abroad, 1.6% more than in 2023. The largest communities live in Europe, chiefly in the countries neighbouring Switzerland: there are 212,100 in France, 101,000 in Germany and 52,600 in Italy. Outside Europe, the main countries of residence are the United States (84,700 people), Canada (41,000) and Australia (26,600).
Three quarters of the Swiss Abroad hold more than one nationality
Three quarters of the Swiss Abroad, 617,600 people, have at least one other nationality. Since 2017, this number has risen more quickly than for those with a single (Swiss) nationality (+10.2% as against +9.4%).
Overall, the proportion of Swiss people with multiple nationalities living abroad is the highest among the under-18s (85%), then those aged between 18 and 64 (75%), and finally those aged 65 and over (65%).
The proportion of Swiss people with multiple nationalities is the highest in Latin America and the Caribbean (84%), Oceania (81%) and North America (79%). Argentina and Chile have the highest percentages, at 95% and 92% respectively.
On the other hand, there are fewer Swiss people with multiple nationalities registered in Asia and Africa (63% and 66% respectively). Thailand has the lowest proportion, at 37%.
