What does ‘homeland’ mean to you?
To me, homeland is where my roots grow deep – it’s my family, my culture, the village of my childhood, and the memories that shaped who I am.
In which location or country would you say, ‘This is my home’?
I call both the United States and Switzerland home – America’s bold, assertive spirit gave me opportunities I might never have dared to seize in Switzerland. Switzerland’s steady normalcy is my refuge, like a parent’s embrace when the world feels too chaotic.
Is a sense of belonging a matter of age?
I believe our need for belonging deepens with age. When we’re young, we’re driven to explore the new and exciting; as we grow older, we seek stability. Forming new friendships becomes harder, and being part of a community and culture brings a reassuring sense of security.
How is Switzerland changing, in your view?
When I left Switzerland, the population was six million; now it’s nine, and it feels crowded. Meadows, forests, and even small footpaths are vanishing under concrete as nature gives way to construction.

When do you find Switzerland annoying?
I often wonder why so many Swiss people complain, forgetting the rare privilege of living in a country with stability, safety, and unmatched quality of life. Too often, these blessings are overshadowed by small grievances.
Do you maintain personal contacts with other Swiss?
Yes, my whole family still lives in Switzerland, and we visit each other all the time.
Do you participate in votes in Switzerland? If so, why?
Yes, because it is important to me to take advantage of my democratic rights, and I still do have personal and business interests in Switzerland.
How do you keep informed about what is happening in Switzerland?
I look at the srf.ch site every day and also get the “Swiss Review”.
