It is mainly mothers, children and the elderly who are fleeing the war in Ukraine. Almost two-thirds of all Ukrainian children have become refugees, of whom thousands are now going to school in Switzerland. It is doubly challenging for these children. Not only are they starting lessons in a different language, but many are also doing distance learning with their Ukrainian teachers. They will be full of conflicting emotions. On the one hand, they will hope to feel safe here. On the other, they will be anxious not to lose their connection to home and their native tongue. And what we are learning? That wars do not end when the guns fall silent. Their impact reverberates for generations.
