Ticino: Tourism

The Ticino canton is a veritable treasure trove for tourists with something for everyone.

The three Castles of Bellinzona - Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro - have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, an honour which was then bestowed upon Monte San Giorgio three years later (official website). Other tourist hotspots include Monte Generoso und the mountains San Salvatore, Brè, Lema and Tamaro.

There are many tourist trails, from the Percorso del Cemento (Cement Way, in Parco della Breggia) to the thematic trails in Valle Verzasca and Vallemaggia (for example), but also in Alto Ticino and in the Luganese and Bellinzonese regions. Those who love outdoor team activities will appreciate the Family offer Ticino selection.

When the weather is good, the region’s two biggest lakes (Lago Ceresio and Lago Verbano) are awash with visitors. The historic centres of Ascona (Locarnese), Gandria and Morcote (Luganese) are also definitely worth a visit.

Cable car networks offering spectacular views, such as at the Santuario della Madonna del Sasso, Cardada, Ritom, Monte Comino, Robiei, Pesciüm and Mornera make mountain activities accessible to all. Many such activities are free to Ticino Discovery Card holders. Ticino’s mountainous terrain is a haven for extreme sports but also for more relaxed activities such as golf.

Shopping lovers will head for Lugano’s Via Nassa and the Grancia, Mendrisio and Chiasso shopping centres. Over 100 traditional grotti and over 1000 hectares of vineyards ensure an abundant amount of local vintages, sign of a flourishing enogastronomic culture.
