The Ticino canton boasts new, modern university facilities. The Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI), founded in 1996, specialises in communications, economics, ICT (in Lugano) and architecture (in Mendrisio).

TI education

SUPSI, the University of Applied Sciences of Southern Switzerland, offers over 30 degree courses which contain a healthy mix of scientific theory and career guidance, as reflected in the Department for Learning and Training (DFA).

The Faculty of Theology of Lugano was opened in late 1993, whilst the Franklin College, located in Sorengo, has been uniting European and US students since 1969. Qualifications issued by the College are also accredited in the USA.

Research institutes in Ticino pride themselves on excellence and innovation. The main players are the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) based in Lugano, the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB) and the Institute of Oncology Research (IOR), both located in Bellinzona, and the Institute of Solar Research (IRSOL) in Locarno. All of these organisations work with international partners and have made significant breakthroughs in recent years.
