St. Gallen: History & Tradition

At the dawn of the modern era, the territory of the future Canton of St. Gallen was divided into twelve smaller states of different forms. Regional conflicts often broke out during this period, as the local rulers were constantly trying to extend their power at their subjects' expense. Examples are the hunger revolt in Rapperswil from 1703 - 1704 and the land revolt in Werdenberg, 1719 - 1722. For more than three centuries, there was a strong independence movement in Toggenburg, repeatedly the scene of conflict and bloody uprisings. In 1712 the second Villmergen War actually turned into a federal civil war.

In 1798 the Helvetic Revolution broke out almost everywhere in the territory of St. Gallen. This led to the freeing of the serfs, and republics were proclaimed in many places. Then the French troops marched in, and the territory became part of the Helvetic Republic in May 1798. In 1803, St. Gallen was founded as a canton and joined the Swiss Confederation.

Tradition – the Hofchilbi Fair

Feel like celebrating in the historic surroundings of the town of Wil? The Hofchilbi Fair is the perfect way to round of a day exploring the region around St. Gallen. The fair dates back to the ceremony of the dedication of the Court Chapel of Wil in 1540, the Court serving at the time as the administrative headquarters of the Abbey of St. Gallen. Up to 1722, This ecclesiastical dedication was celebrated annually as "Hofchilbi"until 1722, but the town of Wil reinstated the ancient custom in 1972 and, since then has held a boisterous party every year in July.

Culinary tradition

Toggenburg farmer's Schüblig
"Häsch Schüblig i de Ore?" (have you got "schüblig"in your ears?) is a well-known saying in Eastern Switzerland. It means someone is mishearing or does not want to understand what is being said. The "schüblig" to which the saying refers is a raw beef or pork sausage, normally eaten uncooked.
