Vreni Schneider

Vreni Schneider

Vreni Schneider, the former Swiss ski racer, was born on 26 November 1964 in Elm, where she continues to live with her family. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, she dominated the ski racing scene. So numerous were her successes during that period that she remains, to this day, one of the outstanding women ski racers of all time. 


Eveline Hasler

Eveline Hasler

Eveline Hasler was born in Glarus on 22 March 1933. She studied psychology and history at the universities of Fribourg and Paris. On completing her studies, she worked as a teacher in St. Gallen. Her first literary publications, during the 1960s and 70s, were mainly books for children and young people. Her later work has included a growing output of lyrics and adult literature. Hasler now lives in Ticino. Her books often deal with subjects from Swiss history. One example is her work  “Anna Göldin, letzte Hexe”, published in 1982. This is a novel about the fate of the maid of Glarus, Anna Göldi, who fell victim to the last witchcraft trial in Europe and was executed.


Fritz Zwicky

Fritz Zwicky (1898 – 1974) was one of the foremost astrophysicists of the 20th Century. He was a professor at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California, the creator of the morphological method, and came up with several inventions in rocket technology. The Cantonal Library of Glarus manages his estate with the help of the Fritz Zwicky Foundation.


Joachim Heer

Dr. Joachim Heer (1825 – 1879) was the President of the Swiss Confederation, National Councillor, and an ambassador to Germany. At the age of 32, he was the youngest Chief of the Executive Council in the history of Glarus. He showed tireless dedication to his people and country, helped with the rebuilding of burnt-down Glarus, and was involved in the formulation of three factory acts. Joachim Heer was a man of tolerance and reconciliation between religions denominations and the saviour of the Capuchin monastery in Näfels.
