Joseph Deiss

Joseph Deiss

Born in Fribourg on 18 January 1946, is a Swiss economist and politician. He used to lecture in political economy and economic policy at Fribourg University, where he eventually became Dean of the Faculty. But Deiss is better known as a politician. A member of the Christian Democrat Party, he served as a Federal Councillor from 1999 to 2006. On 14 December 2009 he was elected President of the United Nations General Assembly. He will take office officially in September 2010, at the opening of the 65th General Assembly.


 

Joseph Siffert

Joseph Siffert

Born in Fribourg on 7 July 1936 - died in England on 24 October 1971.

Siffert was a veteran Swiss motor racing driver. Famous for a string of victories, he competed in 96 Grand Prix races in the Formula 1 world championship between 1962 and 1971. During his career, "Jo" Siffert clocked up a total of 68 points and celebrated two wins. He recorded six podiums, two pole positions and 4 best racing laps. He died during a Formula 1 trial at Brands Hatch.


 

Jean Tinguely

Jean Tinguely

Born in Fribourg on 22 May 1925 - died in Berne on 30 August 1991. This Swiss painter and sculptor is known primarily for his works of sculpture called  "meta-mechanics." These machines combine hydraulic wheels with sound effects. To quote the Financial Times, "his machines work wonderfully well, but they produce nothing. It is for us to decode their somber and ambiguous messages."


 

Daniel Vasella

Daniel Vasella

Born in Fribourg in 1953, is a Doctor of Medicine whose first job was as a consultant physician at Berne's university hospital, the Inselspital. Then he worked for Sandoz Pharma, holding office as CEO until 1996. Vasella also headed  Novartis, the new company resulting from the merger between Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz. In 2010, after 14 years as the company's CEO and executive member of the Board of Directors, Vasella left his post as Chief Executive. He is still the Chairman of its Board of Directors.
