Berne: Culture

The Canton of Berne is a place where city and countryside, culture and nature, tradition and modernity rub shoulders and which also offers a varied cultural programme. As demonstrated again and again by the annual city rankings, singles, families and pensioners all value the quality of life in Berne. The city really comes alive during the warmer months of the year, with urban swimming in the Aare, classical concerts in the Elfenau Orangery Gardens, or dancing on the Gurten. Summertime Berne is an experience for all.

Things to discover …

The Zibelemärit (Bernese German dialect; English: onion market) is an annual market with aspects of a fair in the old town of Berne. It takes place every fourth Monday in November.

The Zibelemärit opens very early in the day, at around 03:00 to 04:00. Later in the morning, the narrow alleys are usually packed tight with people, which is what the Bernese call the Gstungg. A general confetti battle in which mostly children participate ensues at four o'clock in the afternoon, officially ending the market. More (link only in German)

Don't miss…

Bern Grand-Prix

The Bern Grand-Prix is a racing festival and top-notch spectacle both on and off the road. In 2011 over 25,000 competitors took part in this race along the "10 most beautiful miles in the world." The biggest racing event in Switzerland is not only a competition for the elite, but also a family attraction.

The unique backdrop of Bern's Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lends a special appeal to the event. Fans, friends and families congregate in the streets, and groups of musicians add to the atmosphere.
