Valais: Facts & Figures

The life of a canton can also be expressed in figures, percentages, kilograms, population statistics or any other unit of measurement. These serve to track its development at many different levels. Thus the Valais publishes data on the main subjects for its 14 districts.

 

Did you know…?

  • +1.6% was the canton’s population growth rate in 2008. In absolute terms, this meant 4661 more inhabitants. This growth rate outstrips that of Switzerland as a whole, which amounts to +1.4%.
  • 10,525 GWh was the amount of electricity generated in the Valais in the 2007-08 period, of which 10,040 GWh was hydro-power.

 

The figures keep coming

  • 2 is the number of official languages in the Canton: French and German.
  • 53,085 tonnes of fruit were grown in the Valais in 2008 – 38,070 tonnes of apples and 5350 tonnes of apricots.
  • 354 million francs is the gross profit from agriculture for the Canton of Valais.
  • 35% of Switzerland’s vineyards are in the Valais, making the Canton the number-one wine producer in Switzerland.
