Nidwalden: History & Tradition
The two half-cantons of Nidwalden and Obwalden originally formed the Canton of Unterwalden. With Schwyz and Uri, Unterwalden was one of the three founding cantons which, in 1291, laid the foundation of present-day Switzerland. The alliance between them kept the peace until around 1330.
