Basel City: Facts & Figures

Life in a Canton can be expressed in figures, percentages, kilograms, numbers of inhabitants and many other units of measurement which record its development at a variety of levels. Not counting the rural municipalities, the City of Basel numbers 165,529 inhabitants, and therefore ranks third in Switzerland in terms of population, behind Zurich and Geneva. The Canton’s area is quite incompatible with its high population density. This is, in fact, the smallest canton in the Swiss Confederation, at just 37 square kilometres.
